After the discovery of gold in 1867, Northern New Mexico began to be flooded with would-be prospectors scouring the mountains and staking their claims. With the rush of miners came homesteaders, ranchers, circuit riders, gamblers, thieves and ...a serial killer. Over the next 3 years people started to quietly disappear on the dangerous mountain roads between the mining towns. Our story takes place on the eve of the killer's last murder but things do not go as planned as a young mother, Rosa, and her son inadvertently interfere.
Having grown up in the west, I have always been fascinated by the gritty, true stories of western lore Every western cliché that you can think of, (stagecoach and train robberies, gunslinger shootouts, vigilante justice, gold strikes, land battles, you name it) it happened in Colfax County, New Mexico; this is where the West really happened. I have been sharing the story of Nine Mile Creek, and many others like it, as a historical interpreter for years, even telling it around a campfire just miles away from where the events actually took place almost 150 years ago. So what started as a campfire story seemed to cry out to be told once more on the screen, but for a different reason.
What’s most unique about this story is that it’s Rosa’s story, a mixed-race woman in the hardened American west, a voice rarely heard in the history books. Had this not been such a terrifying and tragic tale we would’ve never heard Rosa’s story. We wanted to make sure Rosa's voice was not forgotten.
We set out to make a short film that captures the essence of a campfire tale and still portrays the authentic American West (minus the tuberculosis). This film has been the culmination of our teams' studies at Goldsmiths University of London, and was no simple feat. So how do you recreate the wild west in the lush green English countryside on a student budget? We had an incredible outpouring of support, raising the majority of our funds from friends and family via Kickstarter. Multiple locations, stunts, shoot-outs, authentic costumes and set design, all on a brief five-day shoot became a labour of love to bring this harrowing story to life.
